Project Overview:
This project consists of a collaborative effort aimed at preparing students at Grant Union High School and Sacramento High School to meet the Roundtable Standards in Mathematics and English for California High School Graduates. The principal investigators are Sandra Murphy and Faith Paul. The project directors are Judith Kysh and Jayne Marlink. The faculty evaluators are Jonathan Sandoval, Ph.D. (Professor) and Jon Wagner, Ph.D. (Professor). The research assistants are Edwin Alagozian and Kimberly Rodriguez.
Evaluation:
Utilizing a variety of approaches to assessment, the first year of the project will be devoted to planning and gathering information regarding students perceptions of their learning environments in the areas of mathematics and English. We will also be collecting demographic and descriptive information from the two high schools. Much of this information is commonly reported to the state and the community.
Procedure:
We will ask the school staff to cooperate with our research team to gather information about student ethnicity and gender distribution, proportion of limited English proficient (LEP) students, proportion of students completing A-F college preparatory English and math courses, number of students completing full A-F preparatory sequence, number of students taking SAT or ACT, student GPA in English, science, and math, average daily attendance (ADA), number of students who dropped out of school or left for unknown reasons, number of graduates, number of graduates enrolling in post secondary education, and other relevant information developed by the schools, school districts, or project.
Time Period:
The evaluation will be planned and administered between March 1998 and October 1998. In the Spring, we will be obtaining access to school wide information. In the Fall, we will begin to collect information from teachers and students about the curriculum and approaches to teaching.
